Cancer Hospital Units

Patients at the Cancer Hospital of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital receive specialized care within the following nursing units:

Surgical Oncology - 6 North

The Surgical Oncology unit provides pre- and post-surgical care to adult patients with cancer. This includes cardiac monitoring, chemotherapy administration, radiation therapy and ancillary services. Other services such as ostomy and wound management, acute post-operative care, as well as patient teaching are also provided by the 6 North nursing staff.

In addition, a minor procedure room is available to enable patients to remain on the unit while receiving treatments. The unit is comprised of 31 private rooms, all with refrigerators, pull-out couches, and refrigerators.

Medical Oncology - 5 North

The Medical Oncology unit is comprised of three areas on the 5 North floor.

The Urgi-Care Center provides for stable, acutely ill patients to be admitted directly to the oncology service, bypassing the Emergency Department. Triage is conducted by experienced oncology nursing staff and physicians.

The Same Day Chemotherapy Unit is an area on 5 North where patients needing short chemotherapy treatments, blood transfusions or other outpatient treatments can be cared for. This unit is open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., seven-days-a-week and is staffed by experienced oncology chemotherapy-certified nurses.

The 5 North Inpatient Unit is a 31-bed, all private room unit with pull-out couches and refrigerators for patient comfort. This unit specializes in the care of patients with solid tumor disease and those who are experiencing side effects from cancer treatment such as sepsis and anemia.

Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Hematology/Oncology Unit - 4 North

The Bone Marrow Transplant Unit is comprised of 11 beds in a protected environment. All rooms are private and pull-out couches and refrigerators are provided. The primary patient population of this unit is patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation for treatment of their cancer. The Bone Marrow Transplant program is an accredited program through the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapies (FACT).

The Hematology/Oncology Unit is a 20-bed unit focusing on care of patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndrome. Care focuses on treating the disease itself with chemotherapy, radiation therapy and other medical managements as well as managing the side effects of cancer treatment such as anemia, thrombocytopenia, and sepsis.
