Keeping your Family Safe In and Around Cars
- Properly restrain all children younger than 13 in the back seat on every ride.
- Read the instructions that come with your car seat.
- Keep INFANTS REAR FACING in the backseat until at least one year of age and at least 20 pounds (preferably to the upper height and weight limits of your particular seat (22 – 35lbs). NEVER PLACE AN INFANT SEAT IN FRONT OF AN AIRBAG!
- When children outgrow their rear-facing seats and are a minimum age 1 and at least 20 pounds, they should ride in a forward-facing child safety seat, in the back seat, until they reach the upper weight or height limit of the particular seat (usually around age 4 and 40 pounds).
- Once children outgrow their forward-facing seats, they should ride in booster seats, in the back seat. NJ Law states, “All children must ride in a child restraint/booster seat until they are at least 80lbs. or 8 yrs. old.”
- Once a child reaches 8 yrs old or 80 lbs., they can use the adult seat belt in the back seat, if it fits properly.
- Walk all the way around a parked vehicle to check for children before getting into the car and starting the motor to check for toys, objects, and especially children.
- Make sure everyone in your vehicle buckles up for every ride!
