Of the many parathyroid, thyroid, and adrenal gland surgeries each year, a greater number are being performed with minimally invasive techniques than ever before. Different from traditional surgery, minimally invasive surgery results in smaller incisions, minimal scarring, less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay, and a quicker recovery.

Minimally invasive surgery is performed with specially designed instruments and small cameras (called endoscopes) which are inserted through small incisions in the skin. These allow the surgeon to see inside the body and perform surgery without needing to make a large incision. The surgeon can view the body organs on a TV monitor that is connected to the endoscope. Some operations can be performed with small incisions under local anesthesia as an outpatient. Surgery through small incisions without using a scope is called “keyhole surgery”.

The Endocrine Surgery Center is a major referral center for surgery on the parathyroid, thyroid, and adrenal glands. More operations were performed on the parathyroid and adrenal gland in 2004 at RWJUH than any other hospital in the state of New Jersey. In addition, RWJUH ranked 6th of 76 New Jersey hospitals for the number of thyroidectomy procedures performed.
