Jeffrey L. Carson, MD
Richard C. Reynolds Professor of Medicine
Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine

Dr. Jeffrey L. Carson is Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ-RWJMS) in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he is also the Richard C. Reynolds, MD Chair in General Internal Medicine. Dr. Carson’s appointments at UMDNJ-RWJMS also include Medical Director for the Center for Innovations in Bloodless Surgery and Medicine and Medical Director of the Executive Health Program.
Dr. Carson’s research has focused on blood management and adverse effects of blood transfusion. He has published over 100 articles and more than 30 books and book chapters including publications in JAMA, the Lancet, and Transfusion. Dr. Carson has been included in the Best Doctors list for many years and has been the recipient of six teaching awards including the 2002 Alpha Omega Honor Medical Society Faculty Recognition Award.
Dr. Carson received his medical degree from Hahneman Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he also completed an internship, residency and chief residency at Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital. He received his research training in epidemiology and biostatistics as a Henry J. Kaiser Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania. He was Fogarty Senior International Fellow at the University of Oxford in 1995-1996.
Michael B. Steinberg, MD, M.P.H.
Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. Michael Steinberg is a general internist with dual appointments at UMDNJ-RWJMS and the School of Public Health. In addition to his medical degree, he has master’s level training in the field of public health education and behavioral science. He is actively teaching in the internal medicine residency program, and has received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Department of Medicine.
In addition, Dr. Steinberg is the Medical Director of the School of the Public Health-Tobacco Dependence Clinic. He has published and presented on several topics related to preventive medicine and tobacco issues. His research interests include delivery of clinical preventive services and tobacco dependence treatment in primary care and hospital settings.
Dr Steinberg received his bachelor’s from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and his master’s in Public Health and Medical Degree from UMDNJ-RWJMS. Dr. Steinberg completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Elaine A. Leventhal, MD, PhD
Professor of Medicine
Dr. Elaine Leventhal is a general internist with the Division of General Internal Medicine at UMDNJ and is a professor of medicine at UMDNJ-RWJMS. She received her bachelor of science degree from Queens, New York, her Ph.D. from Yale University in Connecticut and her medical degree from University of Wisconsin, with fellowship training in Geriatrics at the Middleton VAMC in Madison, Wisconsin.
She currently practices inpatient hospital medicine as well as an outpatient clinical practice. Her clinical interests include behavioral science and she is a nationally recognized expert in the field of gerontology. She has published numerous articles in the fields of gerontology and behavioral science, including publications in JAMA, Journal of the American Geriatric Society and Preventive Medicine.
Dr. Leventhal has received several awards and honors and is involved in numerous professional appointments. She is a member of the Center for State Health Policy, associate member of the faculty for the graduate school of Rutgers University and a member of the board of The Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
Gloria A. Bachman
Associate Dean for Women’s Health

A leading expert in obstetrics and gynecology, Dr. Gloria Bachmann is a well known authority on women throughout the life span. She holds numerous professional positions at UMDNJ-RWJMS including Director of the Women’s Health Institute and Chief of the OB/GYN service at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Her excellence in advancing the understanding of obstetrics and gynecology has been recognized by the profession which has accorded her numerous awards. Honors include Best Teacher Award, the prestigious Woodrow Wilson/Johnson and Johnson Award for her work in research trials and the Award of Excellence from the Women’s Heart Foundation for her efforts on behalf of women’s heart health.
Dr. Bachmann earned her BA from Rutgers University, an MMS degree from Rutgers Medical School and her medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.
