About Sleeve Gastrectomy
There are several different options for weight loss surgery. It is important that you gather all of the information you need and talk with your doctor about what type of weight loss surgery is right for you.
Weight loss surgery can be categorized in one of two ways:
- Restrictive: food is restricted but digestion and absorption remains normal
- Malabsorptive: the size of the stomach is reduced, and digestion is altered
Sleeve gastrectomy is a restrictive procedure in which the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach. Using staples, the surgeon will create a sleeve-shaped stomach and the excised portion of the stomach is removed.
This procedure is typically for patients with a BMI of 60 or higher and is usually performed as the first part of a two-procedure treatment, with the second part being gastric bypass.
