Carotid Artery Surgery for Stroke Prevention
The most common cause of a stroke is a sudden blockage of blood flow to the brain. A partial blockage of the carotid artery (one of the major blood vessels to the brain) can be repaired to prevent a stroke and restore normal blood flow.
Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital performs nearly 200 carotid operations a year with outstanding results. While the average stroke rate for the state of New Jersey is 1.5%, our rate is 1%. Most carotid surgeries are performed under general anesthesia and cerebral monitoring (monitoring brain waves).
Alternatives to Surgical Treatment
As an alternative to surgery, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital also provides angioplasty and stent placement for those better-suited for endovascular treatment.
