New Brunswick - A large new pediatric unit has opened at The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, offering private rooms and all the family-friendly amenities that have earned the hospital top marks for patient satisfaction.
The new unit, consisting of 24 private rooms, occupies the new fifth floor of the expanding children's hospital, and replaces a unit that had been located within Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
"What are the hallmarks of a top children's hospital - the highest quality care and a caring, compassionate environment," said Clifton R. Lacy, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. "Our children's hospital has the leading-edge technology and the clinical talent of an academic medical center combined with child-friendly and family-centered care."
The new child-friendly unit is equipped with sleeping accommodations for parents and roomy private bathrooms with showers and medicine cabinets for personal effects. All rooms have refrigerators, DVD, VCR and Xbox video games. Parents will also appreciate the lounge with refrigerator, microwave and comfortable chairs. The unit accommodates newborns to children up to age 11.
The new unit also has a large schoolroom with computers and Internet access. Tutors are available to help children keep up with their schoolwork while hospitalized. The unit's large, colorful playroom is divided into activity zones so children can play, create, or watch a video.
The Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital has consistently ranked in the top 1 percent nationally in patient satisfaction for children's hospitals, according to Press Ganey Associates, a leader in patient satisfaction monitoring.
"The family-friendly amenities are a fine complement to the comprehensive medical and surgical services provided at the children's hospital, which now include pediatric cardiology, epilepsy care, a Regional Perinatal center and soon, cardiac surgery," according to Dr. Daniel Notterman, Physician-in-Chief of the children's hospital and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
The new unit is part of a previously announced $30 million expansion for the 72-bed children's hospital. The 56,500 square-foot expansion will also allow for the consolidation of all medical services for children, including the most medically-fragile infants, within the family-friendly environs of the children's hospital. In addition, the Special Care Nursery and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be moved from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital to the children's hospital.
