New Brunswick, NJ – The Safe Kids Middlesex County Coalition, lead by the Level One Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), on Aug. 4 participated in the National Night Out celebration in Dunellen, the first time the borough has taken part in the anti-crime campaign’s 26-year history.

“We partnered with the Dunellen Police Department to provide residents with a resource table, an interactive safety game, safety belt fit-test stations, and ‘Spot the Tot,’ which demonstrates for parents and caregivers the importance of walking all the way around your vehicle before backing out of a driveway or parking spot to prevent back-over injuries and deaths,” said Dunellen resident Diana Starace, Safe Kids Middlesex County Coordinator and Injury Prevention Coordinator at RWJUH.

Also participating in the local National Night Out were Dunellen’s Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service (EMS) unit. Food and drinks were donated by area businesses. The evening attracted a crowd of several hundred people.

National Night Out aims to heighten drug prevention and crime awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs, strengthen the partnership between community members and their law-enforcement officials, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
