New Brunswick- The Level I Trauma Center at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) has been re-verified by the Verification Review Committee (VRC), an ad hoc committee of the Committee on Trauma (COT) of the American College of Surgeons. This achievement recognizes the trauma center's dedication to providing exceptional care to critically injured patients.

"We are thrilled to earn this status from the American College of Surgeons Verification Review Committee," said Stephen K. Jones, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. "Our talented team of trauma surgeons, nurses and allied health professionals are committed to pursuing the latest advances and sharing best practices with others in their field. They have also been extremely dedicated to educating the public about ways to prevent traumatic injury to both adults and children. This is a proud achievement for our academic medical center and our entire team of health care professionals."
Established by the American College of Surgeons in 1987, the COT's Consultation/Verification Program for hospitals promotes the development of trauma centers in which participants provide not only the hospital resources necessary for trauma care, but also the entire spectrum of care to address the needs of all injured patients. This spectrum encompasses the pre-hospital phase through the physical rehabilitation process.
The Level I Trauma Center at RWJUH is a regional level one trauma center. RWJUH is one of only three level one trauma centers designated by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. A level one center is the highest designation a hospital can receive.
There are five separate categories of verification in the COT's program. Each category has specific criteria that must be met by a facility seeking that level of verification. Each hospital undergoes an on-site review by a team of experienced site reviewers, who use the current Resources for the Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual as a guideline in conducting the survey.
Verified trauma centers must meet the essential criteria that ensure trauma care capability and institutional performance, as outlined by the American College of Surgeons' Committee on Trauma in its current Resources for Optimal Care of the Injured Patient manual.
The ACS Committee on Trauma's verification program does not designate trauma centers. Rather, the program provides confirmation that a trauma center has demonstrated its commitment to providing the highest quality trauma care for all injured patients. In New Jersey, the state Department of Health and Senior Services governs the establishment and designation of trauma centers.
