Monday, August 16, 2004
New Brunswick - Artists Mentoring Against Racism, Drugs and Violence: Healing Through the Arts, a five-week summer arts camp that explores the issues facing today's youth, concluded Friday, August 13, with a series of student-created exhibits.
The evening began at 6:00 p.m. with the unveiling of a mural designed by the youths at Alice Jennings Archibald Park on Van Dyke Avenue in New Brunswick.
Following the mural presentation at 6:30 p.m., guests had the opportunity to view the students' artwork in the Mason Gross School of the Arts gallery, located at 33 Livingston Avenue, and watch a parade from the Mason Gross building to the Roosevelt School at 83 Livingston Avenue displaying music, dance and masks created by the students. Beginning at 7:00 p.m., students participated in a "Night of Artistic Expression" at the Roosevelt School.
This year's theme, "Youth Under Construction," focused on the idea that in addition to the ongoing construction in New Brunswick, we also need to invest in building and developing our communities and our youth as well.
A total of 52 students, ages 10-15, participated in team-building and awareness workshops, took field trips to Liberty Science Center, Rutgers University Team Building Rope Course and the Grounds for Sculpture Park, and listened to ex-gang members speak about gang life.
Sponsors of the program include Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital's Community Health Promotions Program, Center for Latino Arts and Culture at Rutgers University, Puerto Rican Action Board, Suydam Street Reformed Church, Institute for Arts and Humanities Education, and UMDNJ-New Brunswick School Based Program.
Additional funding comes from Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Brunswick Tomorrow and Johnson & Johnson.
