Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Adds Outpatient Procedure to Treat Painful Veins New Light-Based System
Monday, December 13, 2004
New Brunswick, NJ – Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital offers a new painless and minimally invasive procedure to remove unsightly varicose veins. Surgeons at the Vascular Center of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital can remove the veins in one treatment in an outpatient setting, allowing sufferers of painful varicose veins to get back on their feet quickly.
“Minimally invasive approaches make what was once a time-consuming procedure easier and less painful for the patient,” states Dr. Alan Graham, Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
Vascular surgeons at RWJUH are now using a new light-based system that illuminates the vein to enable a quicker and easier removal through small incisions.
“Because the veins are more easily seen by the surgeon, they are completely removed, meaning better results,” says vascular surgeon Lucy Sun Brevetti, MD, of the Vascular Center of New Jersey. “Just as important, it can be done on an outpatient basis.”
Veins are responsible for returning blood from the body to the heart for recirculation. In doing so, the veins in the legs need to work against gravity. This is accomplished through muscle, vein walls and valves located in the veins. Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins malfunction, impeding the flow of blood, and causing the veins to become enlarged, or twisted.
