About the Unit

6N is a 31-bed unit, including 4 intermediate / step-down beds.  6N  is  located in the Cancer Hospital on the sixth floor.  It is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There are 3-4 critical care technicians each shift who assists with basic patient care.  There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.

Patient population

The 6N nursing staff cares for  adult and geriatric surgical oncology and acute care surgical patients ages 18 years through the life span.  Patients cared for on this unit are either general surgical or have cancer-related surgeries including head and neck, gynecological, thoracic, gastrointestinal, and urological systems.

Patient Care Needs

Patients on 6N require 1:5 to 1:6 nursing care, with lower patient ratios for intermediate care patients.  These patients typically require pre- and post-surgical care, cardiac monitoring, chemotherapy, phase I, II, and III research agents and IVIG colony stimulating factors. 6N staff provide frequent nursing assessments and ancillary service interventions such as chest tube insertion and care, wound care, ostomy management, accessing and managing implanted ports, intra-hepatic pumps, Pleurx® management, administration of blood products, care of tracheotomies and brachy therapy.  Teaching is provided or reinforced to all patients and significant others regarding surgical procedures, medications, dietary and physical activity recommendations.  Pain management, dietary consultation and OT/PT services are also provided.

About Our Nurses

Nursing care is provided by professional registered nurses competent in the care of surgical oncology and medical-surgical patients. Competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Telemetry certification
  • Provision of respiratory care treatments
  • Pain management
  • Hemodynamic monitoring/arterial line management
  • Radiation therapy management
  • Certification in chemotherapy administration, including intraperitoneal infusion IV certificatios
  • Intermediate care protocols
  • Implementing research protocols
  • Neutrapenic/thrombocytopenic therapy management
  • Management of central line, implanted ports, and tunneled catheters
  • Blood administration
