About the Unit

7T is a 29-bed unit, including 4 intermediate / step-down beds. 7T is located in the Tower Building on the seventh floor. It is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There are 2-3 critical care technicians each shift who assist with basic patient care. There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.

Patient population

The 7T nursing staff cares for adult neuroscience and acute care medical-surgical patients ages 18 years through the lifespan. Patients cared for on this unit include but are not limited to head injuries, cerebral vascular accidents (CVA), spinal stenosis, various brain tumors and cerebral vascular anomalies.

Patient Care Needs

Patients on 7T receive 1:4 to 1:6 nursing care. Patient care includes frequent neurological assessments and continuous EEG monitoring, post-operative care, administration of blood products, dressing changes, chest physiotherapy and selected respiratory treatments. Intermediate care of the neurosurgical patient may also be provided with continuous cardiac monitoring and interpretation, frequent neurological assessments, I&O, arterial hemodynamic monitoring and pulse oximetry. Intravenous pharmacological agents utilized for intermediate care patients may include renal dose dopamine, pronestyl, morphine, methylprednisolone, cardizem, insulin and lidocaine.

Nursing care is provided by professional registered nurses competent in the care of neuroscience and medical-surgical patients. Competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Telemetry certification
  • I.V. Certification
  • Neurological assessments
  • Chest tubes
  • Management of spinal precautions
  • Management of anti-arrhythmic and vasoactive drugs
  • Arterial line management
  • Central line management
  • Provision of respiratory treatments
