About the Unit

9T is a 34-bed unit, including several intermediate/step-down beds. 9T is located in the Tower Building on the ninth floor. It is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There are 2-3 critical care technicians each shift who assists with basic patient care. There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.


Patient population

The 9T nursing staff care for adult medical-surgical patients ages 18 through the life span. Patients cared for on this unit include (but are not limited to): peripheral vascular diseases, carotid stenosis, head injuries, orthopedic injuries related to trauma, post-operative bariatric surgery and general surgery. Secondary diagnoses include deep vein thrombosis, arrhythmias, bowel obstruction, and pneumonia.


Patient Care Needs

Patients on 9T require 1:4 to 1:6 nursing care. Patient care includes (but is not limited to): management of patients with vascular diseases, post-operative care, head injuries, orthopedic injuries, bariatric surgery, administration of blood products, antibiotic therapy, peritoneal dialysis, dressing changes, use of assistive devices, chest physiotherapy and selected respiratory treatments.  Intravenous infusions include (but are not limited to): renal dose Dopamine, Insulin, Morphine, Heparin, and Cardizem. The intermediate care unit manages bariatric, surgical, trauma, and vascular patients requiring continuous cardiac monitoring, arterial blood pressure monitoring, frequent neurological and/or pulse checks, hourly intake and output, and intravenous drug management.

Nursing care is provided by registered nurses competent in the care of surgical and trauma patients. Nursing competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • Blood transfusion
  • IV conscious sedation
  • Management of patients with spinal injuries
  • Arterial line management
  • Chest tubes
  • Intravenous therapy
  • Telemetry certification
  • Neurologic assessment
  • Vascular assessment
  • Traction
  • Provision of respiratory treatments
  • Peritoneal dialysis
  • Trauma Nurse Training and Certification
