About the Unit

BMTU is an 11-bed unit located in the Cancer Hospital Building on the fourth floor. It is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There is a critical care technician each shift who assists with basic patient care. There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.

Patient population

The BMTU nursing staff cares for patients undergoing allogenic transplant or who receive high-dose chemotherapy with subsequent autologous or allogeneic peripheral stem cell or bone marrow transplant. Nursing care is also provided to adult medical oncology and hematology patients, ages 18 years through the lifespan requiring intermediate care. Patients cared for in this unit have a variety of diagnoses. These diagnoses include but are not limited to various leukemia diagnoses, lymphoma, myeloma and myelodysplastic syndromes. Patients from the medical and surgical oncology units requiring intermediate care may be transferred to, and cared for in this unit.

Patient Care Needs

Patients in the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit require 1:1 to 1:3 nursing care. Intermediate and/or acute oncology/hematology patients require high doses of chemotherapy, biotherapy, stem cell rescue, multiple blood products, antimicrobials, and immunosuppressants. In addition, intermediate and/or acute oncology/hematology patients may also be provided with continuous cardiac monitoring, arterial hemodynamic monitoring and continuous pulse oximetry. Additional intravenous pharmacological agents utilized for intermediate/acute care patients may include vasoactive, anti-arrhythmic and anticoagulation medications. Other procedures include hemodynamic monitoring, pain management and sedation.

Nursing care is provided by professional registered nurses competent in the care of medical oncology patients. Competencies include, but are not limited to:

• Implementing research protocols
• Neutropenic/thrombocytopenic management including administration of growth factors
• Management of infectious complications associated with compromised host defense mechanisms
• Telemetry certification
• Intravenous certification

• Blood and blood product administration
• Pain management
• Chemotherapy/immunosuppressive agent administration
• Administration of hematopoetic stem cells
• Hemodynamic monitoring
• Management of vasoactive, anti-arrhythmic and anticoagulant drug therapies
