About the Unit
FSO is a 19-bed unit, located in the Core Pavilion on the street level. It is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There is one critical care technician each shift who assists with basic patient care. There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.
Patient population
The FSO nursing staff care for adult and geriatric orthopaedic, trauma and medical surgical patients ages 18 years through lifespan. Patients cared for on this unit have primarily hip and knee replacements and revisions, spinal surgery, fractures of the ulnar, radial and humerus. Secondary diagnoses may include chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), cardiac arrhythmias, renal failure, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and anemia. Patients requiring cardiac monitoring can also be cared for on this unit.
Patient Care Needs
Patients on FSO receive 1 to 6 nursing care. They require the nursing staff demonstrate expertise in the care of orthopedic, surgical and medical patients. This includes, but is not limited to, management of patients with orthopedic injuries, administration of blood products, antibiotic therapy, post-operative care, dressing changes, use of assistive devices, (continuous passive motion, arterial-venous impulse machines), chest physiotherapy and selected respiratory treatments. Intravenous infusions administered include renal dose dopamine, heparin, morphine, insulin and aminophylline. Patient and family education is provided or reinforced on medications, dietary, physical activity recommendations, treatments and procedures.
