About the Unit

Ped5 is a 24-bed unit, located in the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Hospital on the fifth floor. The unit is open 24-hours- a-day, 7-days-a-week.

There is 1 to 2 pediatric care technicians each shift who assist with basic patient care.  There is a unit secretary on each shift to perform data entry and secretarial duties.


Patient population

The Ped5 nursing staff care for patients from infancy to 11 years of age. These diagnoses include but are not limited to the following sub-specialties: neurology, pulmonary, urology, surgery, trauma, orthopedics, gastroenterology, nephrology, rheumatology, psychiatry, cardiology and endocrinology.


Patient Care Needs

Patients on Ped5 require 1:3 to 1:5 nursing care.  Promoting family centered care is a top priority.  Patients are provided with management of, but not limited to,  permanent central lines, administration of peritoneal dialysis, video EEG monitoring, management of pH probes, pain management, blood product administration, IV therapy, antibiotic administration, care of patients in traction.


About Our Nurses

Nursing care is provided by professional registered nurses competent in the care of pediatric patients.  Competencies include, but are not limited to:

  • IV certification
  • Provision of respiratory care treatments
  • Cardio/respiratory monitoring
  • Age-related competency
