The Facts About Tetanus Shots

Tetanus, also called lockjaw, is caused by bacteria that can enter your blood through a wound. Tetanus is a rare, but deadly, disease. Vaccination is the best way to prevent tetanus. Young children generally receive a series of Td vaccine doses, which also protects against another bacterial infection, diphtheria. A Td booster shot every 10 years following is normally recommended. Adults who haven’t been immunized should receive the vaccine series and a booster every 10 years. If you experience a deep cut or puncture wound and haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last 10 years, seek medical care immediately.
