RWJUH Somerset’s Endoscopy Center brings together board-certified gastroenterologists and experienced nurses performing diagnostic and therapeutic services focusing on the digestive tract, pancreas, bile ducts and liver. The center also specializes in bronchoscopy performed by board-certified pulmonologists.

The center’s newly renovated space on the hospital’s third floor allows patients to receive all of their care in one convenient location, from registration and pre-procedure care through recovery and discharge. Patients have access to the latest technology in a state-of-the-art setting that ensures their privacy and comfort.

Conditions for Bronchoscopy treated by board-certified Pulmonologists include:

  • Tumors or bronchial cancer
  • Airway blockage (obstruction)
  • Narrowed airways (strictures)
  • Inflammation and infections such as Tuberculosis (TB), Pneumonia, and fungal or parasitic lung infections, interstitial pulmonary disease
  • Causes of persistent cough
  • Causes of coughing up blood
  • Spots seen on chest x-ray

Procedures offered at the Endoscopy Center include:

  • Colonoscopy, an exam that enables the gastroenterologists to look at the lining of your colon (large intestine) using a colonoscope.
  • Esophagastroduodenoscopy (EGD), a procedure that allows the gastroenterologist to see the lining of your esophagus (food pipe, stomach and the first part of your small intestine called the duodenum).
  • Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS, LUS), an ultrasound using an endoscope or colonoscope to study the internal organs such as esophagus, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas and colon to look for an abnormal lump or growth.
  • Endoscopic Retrograde-Cholangiography and Pancreatography (ERCP), an endoscopic procedure used to diagnose and treat problems in the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts and pancreas; used in combination with x-ray and the use of an endoscope.

RWJUH Somerset offers a specialized ERCP procedure called Cholangioscopy (spyglass). The Endoscopy Center also features new equipment for ERCP called Exalt, new single-use disposable duodenoscopes that provide high performance and reduce the risk of cross contamination and post-ERCP infection.

  • Bronchoscopy, an endoscopic procedure from a board-certified pulmonologist examining the lungs and air passages. A bronchoscope is passed through your nose or mouth and down into the lungs.

  • Biliary, Esophageal, Duodenal, Colonic stenting
  • Feeding, Gastronomy, and Jejunostomy tubes
  • Electrocautery to control bleeding
  • Argon laser to control bleeding
  • Endoscopic ultrasound guidance to drain pancreatic pseudo cysts
  • Diagnosing of cancers or lesions
  • Esophageal banding
  • Removal of foreign bodies and polyps
  • Dilation of colon, gastric, and esophageal strictures
