What is Liver Cancer?

Liver cancer is cancer that starts in your liver. But secondary liver cancer, cancer that starts in another organ and then spreads to the liver, is more common in the United States than primary liver cancer. These secondary liver cancer tumors are named and treated based on where they started. For example, cancer that started in the lung and spread to the liver is called lung cancer with spread to the liver, not liver cancer, and it is treated as lung cancer.

Liver Cancer Symptoms

Liver disease symptoms often do not show up until the later stages of the disease. Some of the most common symptoms of liver cancer are

  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Feeling very full after a small meal
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Swelling or fluid build-up in the abdomen
  • Itching
  • Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
Some other symptoms of liver cancer can include fever, abnormal bruising, or bleeding.

Many liver disease symptoms can also be caused by other conditions, including other liver problems. It's important to see your doctor right away so the cause can be found and treated.
