Genetic tests look for alterations in a person's genes or changes in the amount, function or structure of key proteins coded for by specific genes. Genetic tests can look at the DNA or RNA that play a role in certain conditions. Abnormal results on these tests could mean that someone has a genetic disorder or predisposition to a disease.

The following information describes the three main types of genetic testing: chromosome studies, DNA studies, and biochemical genetic studies. Tests for cancer susceptibility genes are usually done by DNA studies.
