Cancer Diagnosis

There is no single test that can accurately diagnose cancer. The complete evaluation of a patient usually requires a thorough history and physical examination along with diagnostic testing. Many tests are needed to determine whether a person has cancer, or if another condition (such as an infection) is mimicking the symptoms of cancer.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine plays a major supportive role in the diagnosis and care of cancer patients at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. In addition, this department also supports the Cancer Hospital of New Jersey's research programs through the Divisions of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, which are certified through the American College of American Pathologists.

Anatomic Pathology includes surgical pathology, cytopathology, hematopathology, dermatopathology, and neuropathology.
Clinical Pathology includes transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, molecular diagnostics, hematology, cytogenetics, and microbiology services.
